Encouraged by LOK SATTA’s successful election watch campaigns (97’, 98’ and 99’) in AP, civil society initiatives in Delhi, Rajasthan and Chattisgarh have come forward to undertake similar efforts for the forthcoming elections to their respective state assemblies.

The DELHI ELECTION WATCH is a coalition of concerned citizens and civil society organizations. DEW is politically non-partisan whose major purpose is to mobilize effective citizen participation in the forthcoming Delhi Assembly elections. Click here for info on members representatives of DEW.

Delhi Election Watch (DEW) committee has been constituted which met a number of times over the past few months and evolved a plan of action for the campaign. The following activities are proposed to be undertaken by the DEW committee:

  • Survey of voters expectations and performance of candidates

  • Pre-screening of candidates

  • Know your candidate

  • Candidate Disclosure

  • State level televised debates

  • Go out and vote campaign

  • Voter rolls verification

 

"Pre-Screening of Candidates" CAMPAIGN

The 'Pre-screening of candidates' campaign is part of the Delhi Election Watch (D.E.W.) program under the guidance of a SCREENING COMMITTEE of eminent citizens.

WHAT DOES THE SCREENING COMMITTEE DO?

The Screening Committee will guide the following Collect information from public,media and other sources about prospective candidates for the Assembly Elections.

  • Specify the criteria by which the background, especially the criminal antecedents of these candidates can be assessed.This will be based broadly on the information requirements specified in the Election Commission format for affidavits.
  • After such assessment, write to the political parties not to give nominations to people whi have a criminal record
  • Obtain copies of the affidavits, which the candidates will furnish with their nomination forms.Thereafter, collate, tabulate and analyze such information on the basis pf the criteria and disseminate the same to the voters in the constituency so that they can make an informed choice.

CONSTITUTION OF THE COMMITTEE

The SCREENING COMMITTEE comprises lawyers, judges, journalists and academicians as its members.The Committee is headed by Admiral Tahiliani former Chief of Naval Staff and includes former Delhi High Court Judges S P Wad and Jaspal Singh, P K Dave, former Lt. Governor of Delhi, Shanker Sen and P S Bawa former DGs of Police, P P Rao, Prashant Bhushan, Kamini Jaiswal and Sanjay Parikh, Advocates of the Supreme Court, journalists and academicians including B.G. Verghese, Yogendra Yadav and Madhu Kishwar, Maj. Gen. Saighal (Retd), Maja Daruwala of Commonwealth Human Rights Initiatives, educationists as Mrs.Vibha Parthasarthy and Prof.Syed Shahid Mahdi , Vice Chancellor, Jamia Milia . Mr.K.C.Sivaramakrishnan ,Former Secretary to the Government of India, is the convener of the committee.
